Universities Wales statement on Welsh Government’s response the Diamond Review report
Chair of Universities Wales, Prof. Colin Riordan said:
“The further commitment by Welsh Government today to finding a sustainable solution for both students and universities in Wales is very welcome.
Universities Wales believes that means-tested maintenance grants for Welsh students will give many more talented people the opportunity to transform their life-chances through going to university. There is a body of evidence that shows students need financial support whilst studying and so we are pleased to see Welsh Government taking forward the recommendation to provide this support.
Alongside this support to students, and with the challenges ahead, retaining our world class university system in Wales must also be secured. University funding for key priorities – quality research, part-time provision and expensive subjects such as medicine – is crucial to success on the world stage.
As the key drivers of economic and social transformation, universities are key to the future of people of all backgrounds in Wales. We therefore look forward to working with Welsh Government to deliver the best possible solution for students and universities in Wales.”
