Vietnamese Education Minister visit to Wales

The Vietnamese Education Minister visited Cardiff on Friday, accompanied by the Vietnamese Ambassador to the UK and a large delegation of officials from the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), senior university representatives, several business directors and a number of Vietnamese journalists.

The Vietnamese Minister and Ambassador met with our Minister for Education, Kirsty Williams AM, this afternoon, to sign a memorandum of understanding to consolidate the already strong relationship between the Vietnamese and Welsh education communities.

The memorandum of understanding will also provide for a portfolio of scholarships, including 20 fully funded Chevening-Universities Wales placements.

In the evening, there was a celebration reception and dinner, organised by Universities Wales and hosted by the Minister for International Relations and Welsh Language, Baroness Eluned Morgan AM, at the National Museum.

Kirsty Williams, Minister for Education in Wales, said:

“It’s such a pleasure to host the Vietnamese Minister for Education and Training, and to repay the warm welcome I received when I visited Vietnam last year.

“We already have a close relationship with Vietnam, and the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding signifies our commitment to build on that through strengthening the education and research links between our two countries.

“I’ve always been absolutely clear that international students and staff are welcome here in Wales, and I recently announced £3.5million for our Global Wales partnership to ensure our links with education communities across the world continue to thrive.”

Professor Iwan Davis, Chair of Chair of Global Wales and Chair of Universities Wales’ International Network, said;

“On behalf of Global Wales and all the Welsh universities, I am delighted to welcome the Vietnamese Minister, Ambassador, and their prestigious delegation to Wales.

“Signing this memorandum of understanding today marks a momentous point in the relationship between our two countries’ education sectors and reflects our mutual vision, energy and commitment to the Global Wales programme.

In October I accompanied the Welsh Government’s Minister for Education, Kirsty Williams AM, to Hanoi. I am pleased that we have been able to reciprocate the exceptional welcome we received in Vietnam and hope that the delegates enjoyed their visit to Wales as much as we did hosting them. We look forward to seeing the ambitions contained within the memorandum of understanding become reality, and are thrilled at the prospect of continuing to develop our flourishing relationship”.
