News – Deputy Minister joins Oxford University Expert Panel
Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, Ken Skates, has offered a Welsh voice on an Oxford University Expert Panel looking at new vs. traditional ways of delivering university education in the digital age. Full story on the Welsh Government website.

Consultation – Research capital investment survey
UUK is currently running a survey on research capital investment across the UK, in partnership with HEFCE (available here https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/researchcapital), to inform individual responses to the BIS consultation on the Science Capital Roadmap. UUK would very much like the survey findings to reflect a Welsh perspective on research capital, but have not yet received any responses from institutions in Wales so far. They have now extended the survey deadline to Friday 30 May, and would value submissions from Welsh universities.
Publications – UCAS Stats
UCAS published the May interim applicant statistics for the 2014 cycle on its website on Thursday 29 May 2014. This release reports interim applicant totals in the 2014 UCAS application cycle as at Monday 19 May 2014. Statistics are also provided for applicant totals as at the third Monday in May in previous cycles. This is an interim point in the application cycle and, unlike statistics for application deadlines, no direct comparison between cycles is possible. Applicant and application totals in the 2014 UCAS cycle as of the 24 March deadline for all courses, including those with an earlier October or January deadline, were published last month.
Appointments – HEW Policy Adviser International
HEW is delighted to announce that Gwen Williams (formerly Edwards) will be joining the HEW team as our new Policy Adviser for international. Gwen is currently the Strategic Development Officer at WHEB where she has worked since May 2013. At WHEB, Gwen has taken the lead on the Bioscience and Advanced Manufacturing research groups, and responsibility for following developments in Education policy. Prior to joining WHEB, Gwen spent two years working as a European Parliamentary Officer at the UK Representation to the EU. She has an MSc. in European Politics from the LSE and is a graduate of Durham University. Gwen starts with HEW on 30 June 2014, and can be contacted on email@example.com.
Event – Universities Week – 11 June 2014
Universities Week is being held between 9-13 June 2014 with the theme of ‘Ideas for Life’ at the Natural History Museum in London. HEW will be holding an event on Wednesday 11 June in conjunction with the National Museum of Wales based on how university research impacts on all of us. There will be a canapé reception with an ‘In conversation’ discussion with Professor Julie Williams, Chief Scientific Advisor for Wales. Event – Partnership for Wales conference – 2 June 2014
As part of the Wise Wales project (funded by HEFCW, universities, QAA and NUSW), NUS Wales is running this event on 2 June 2014 in the Wales Millennium Centre between 10.00 and 16.30. The event aims to bring together staff from universities and students’ unions to open up a dialogue about what it means to understand and embed a partnership philosophy within HE.
