A spokesperson for Universities Wales said:
“Universities Wales welcomes the proposed package of maintenance support announced today and is pleased to be part of a system which would give students from Wales the most progressive, generous package of maintenance support in the UK. Welsh universities welcome students from Wales receiving the equivalent of the living wage under this package and have committed to paying at least the Living Wage Foundation’s living wage to all directly employed HE staff by 2018/19.
Universities are operating in an increasingly competitive environment and have absorbed the increases in costs since the introduction of the current tuition fees in 2012. An inflationary uplift in fees from 2018/19, following the increase in fees in England this year, is a necessary step for Welsh universities to continue to deliver for students, communities, the Welsh Government and the economy of Wales.”
