Universities Wales comment on the grant allocations for Welsh Institutions for 2015/16

Commenting on the grant allocations for Welsh Institutions for 2015/16, Universities Wales Director, Amanda Wilkinson said: “Grant allocations have been announced extremely late in the planning cycle this year, and HEFCW faces a real challenge in managing allocations which have been significantly reduced over recent years.

“We are pleased that HEFCW continues to provide essential funding for part time study, research, Welsh-medium provision and postgraduate study in particular. Indeed, there are clear benefits from continued grant funding to universities in Wales. Part time study makes a vitally important contribution to widening access and employment chances. Furthermore, Welsh universities have improved their research performance, with impressive successes in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, including recording the highest percentage of ‘world-leading research’ in terms of its impact.

“In order to grow the economy through improving productivity, and in managing the challenges faced through reduced funding for public services, Wales will need its universities more than ever in the years ahead.”
