University investment allocations for 2011/12 are ‘highly challenging’

Topic: Higher Education funding allocations

FOLLOWING the announcement today that the university funding council for Wales (HEFCW) is cutting public investment to universities in Wales in the 2011/12 academic year by around 5% in cash terms, a spokesperson for Higher Education Wales said:

“This is clearly a very challenging set of allocations for universities in Wales. The reductions in public investment outlined in this announcement will mean that universities may face some difficult decisions in the coming period. The university sector is working to ensure that internal and collaborative efficiencies are maximised so that our people and our resources are focussed on the delivery of frontline priorities. Despite the forthcoming reduction in public investment in higher education, universities are determined that the quality of the student experience remains paramount and that the quality of a university education in Wales is assured.”
