Higher Education Wales Responds to Minister’s Keynote Address

In response to the recent keynote address by the Minister for Education and Skills, Huw Lewis – ‘Welsh Universities – A New Social Partnership’ – Professor Colin Riordan, Chair of Higher Education Wales, says: “Higher Education Wales warmly welcomes the Minister’s announcement of a complete review into the whole package of student support, fees and funding for higher education. With so many changes to support arrangements across the UK in recent years, this is a golden opportunity to take a strategic view of the whole system in Wales, covering not just full time undergraduate but part-time and postgraduate study too.

“This forward-looking approach announced by the Minister is to be applauded, and it makes the Welsh Government the only administration in the UK prepared to grapple with the increasingly emotive issue of student support and funding and the impact that this may have on social mobility. Our universities play a vital role in encouraging people from all backgrounds and all ages to fulfil their learning potential and we look forward to building on our existing constructive relationship with the Welsh Government during the review process. We are keen to offer our input and to play an active role in the process for the benefit of our prospective students, the future of our universities, and the opportunities of economic growth for our nation.”
