Higher Education Wales responds to the Welsh Government’s Draft Budget for 2014-15

Higher Education budgets are tight at present and we will look carefully at the proposed funding for the sector in the coming days. Given commitments to full time undergraduate study, we will be keen to ensure that we can maintain core support for part time study, research (where university research comprises half the R&D base of Wales), Welsh medium provision, high cost subjects and postgraduate study. Wales has the lowest higher education participation rate of all home nations and it will be important to ensure that opportunities to study are not curtailed, impacting on both widening access and up skilling of the workforce.

Given the ‘multiplier effect’ of investment in higher education, any reduction in funding will have an impact on the wider economy – the higher education sector is one of Wales’ most valuable industries, creating tens of thousands of jobs, and generating some 3% of the nation’s GDP.
