Universities Wales response to UK Government announcement on support for universities and students

In response to the UK Government’s announcement on support for universities and students, Amanda Wilkinson, Director of Universities Wales, said:

“Welsh universities play an important role for people and places across Wales, bringing economic and social benefits to the entire country. As such, our universities will be critically important to our nation’s recovery from this crisis. If the sector is not preserved in Wales there will be an impact on communities, businesses and the foundational economy.

“There is an urgent need for financial support to address the severe impact the COVID-19 will have on higher education. We will seek clarity on what today’s announcement by UK Government means for universities in Wales. However, this announcement must be a first step. The UK and devolved governments should work together to address the challenges faced by universities, and the needs of the communities they serve, across the UK.”
