Universities Wales response to Welsh Government’s letter to UK Government on student number controls

On Friday 29 May, Education Minister Kirsty Williams wrote to the Minister of State for Universities expressing a ‘deep concern’ over plans to announce the UK government’s intention to introduce temporary student number controls in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to the letter, a Universities Wales spokesperson said:

“We are deeply concerned about the announcement that we understand will be made by UK Government on 1 June on student number controls. We understand that this will see the Department for Education in England effectively place a control on Welsh institutions, rather than work with Welsh Government to find a solution.

“HEFCW is currently consulting with the Welsh sector on an approach to admissions in Wales to maintain stability, in line with the four-nation approach that had been proposed.

“The foremost priority, at this time of uncertainty, should be that those students who wish to access higher education this autumn are able to do so.”
