University clearing 2013 – statement

Statistics published yesterday by the UK admissions body UCAS, showed that acceptances to Welsh universities have increased by over 8% from 2012, with 1,440 more acceptances in 2013. The figures were released as school pupils in England, Northern Ireland and Wales received their A-Level results.

A spokesperson from Higher Education Wales said: “Many congratulations to students who have collected their results, and to those with places at their chosen university. For those that did not quite make the grade, all universities in Wales are providing places through clearing and our advice to students who may not have got the grades they needed is not to panic but to contact the universities’ clearing centres. Higher education is an excellent investment and employers tell us they are going to need more people with graduate level skills in the coming years. 91% of graduates from full time first degree courses in Wales are employed six months after leaving higher education – which is higher than the UK average. The key for students is to ensure they are on the course that suits them, and should seek as much information from both advisers and universities as possible”.

Applicants who fell short of the results they needed should try to enter clearing, and contact the universities’ admissions offices to see if a lower offer can be accepted. Applicants should also consider consulting available careers services, for example, Careers Wales.
