Welsh universities win prestigious awards

Welsh universities have emerged victorious during the recent Times Higher Education Awards, held in association with Santander Universities and supported by the Higher Education Academy.

Now in their ninth year, the prestigious Times Higher Education Awards are a highlight of the academic calendar and celebrate the excellence and outstanding achievements of institutions, teams and individuals in the UK higher education sector.

The UK Shadow Minister for Universities, Science and Skills, Liam Byrne, joined universities from across over the country to celebrate the greatest ideas, the finest practice and the very best researchers and teachers.

Aberystwyth University’s Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences won the Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology award for their entry which focused on the breeding and development of High Sugar Grasses. Awards judge Chris Cobb, chief operating officer and secretary of the University of London, said Aberystwyth’s innovations won out against an excellent field. “The combined impact on food production and the environment makes this bid doubly compelling and a worthy winner.”

Meanwhile, Welsh Crucible’s “game-changing” efforts to develop future research leaders for Wales, was recognised by it winning the Outstanding Contribution to Leadership Development prize. Welsh Crucible is a programme of personal, professional and leadership development for highly promising research leaders of the future who are building their careers in Wales. Mark Pegg, chief executive of the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education and a member of the judging panel, said: “Feedback is overwhelmingly positive, with game-changing impacts on attitudes and behaviours.”

John Gill, editor, Times Higher Education, said: “Once again this year’s judging process proved an inspiration for all involved. Our winners exemplify the extraordinary things that are going on in our universities and colleges day in, day out.”
